Informed by evaluation results, community insights, and input from advocates across Missouri, MFH launched the Missouri Advocate Network to strengthen advocacy at the individual, organizational, and partnership levels. Over six and a half years, 11 organizations sent advocates to collaborate, learn, and build a new vision for the health advocacy field. This journey reflects a shift in leadership, with advocates’ voices at the center, creating lasting impact in the field.
We’ve crafted a comprehensive strategic plan designed to transform conversations into actionable outcomes. With clearly defined pillar teams at the forefront, we've taken significant steps to build focused action plans that address our core goals. Our work centers on gaining clarity within each pillar to drive meaningful progress. Through this approach, we are committed to shifting and sharing power while building capacity across our teams, ensuring that each initiative is impactful and sustainable.

In 2018, Missouri Foundation for Health (MFH) began transforming its advocacy strategy by centering health advocates’ experiences. This effort focused on three areas:
Insights
Evaluation results from interviews, trainings, and surveys revealed key lessons about Missouri's health advocacy landscape.
Advocates
Direct input from Missouri advocates highlighted their challenges and resource needs.
Stakeholders
Discussions with community members, leaders, government representatives, and MFH’s Board identified systemic needs.A clear theme emerged: the need to strengthen health advocacy in Missouri, leading to the launch of the Exemplary Advocate Cohort.
The Missouri Advocate Network is an initiative aimed at strengthening health advocacy in Missouri at the individual, organizational, and partnership levels. It seeks to improve the health and well-being of individuals and communities, eliminate health inequities, transform systems, and ensure all Missourians have an equal opportunity to live their healthiest lives.
The cohort includes 11 organizations, each represented by two advocates. Additionally, the effort is guided by two external facilitators and two staff members from the Missouri Foundation for Health (MFH).
The goal is to strengthen health advocacy across Missouri to address health inequities, transform systems, and ensure all Missourians have equal opportunities for health and well-being.
The pillar teams focus on three core areas:
Shift Power: Rebalancing decision-making power to marginalized communities.
Build-Share Power: Encouraging collaborative and equitable partnerships.
Build Capacity: Equipping advocates with skills and resources for effective action.
